Blacks were first used in significant numbers during the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783), where both the British and American forces recruited enslaved and free African Americans. The British offered freedom to enslaved individuals who joined their ranks, while the Continental Army also accepted Black soldiers, notably in the 1775 formation of the first Black regiment in the Revolutionary War. Their participation laid the groundwork for future military service by African Americans in subsequent conflicts.
