He assembled the international coalition that successfully prosecuted the war in the Persian Gulf against Iraq's Saddam Hussein, who invaded Kuwait on Aug. 1, 1990. Through "Operation Desert Storm," the coalition forces drove the Iraqis out of Kuwait in a little more than a month after the offensive was launched on January 17, 1991.
A second Bush accomplishment was the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), which was signed on July 31, 1991, with Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev. START represented the largest and most complex arms control treaty in history, and its final implementation in late 2001 resulted in the removal of about 80 percent of all strategic nuclear weapons then in existence.
