Why was birth control developed?

The earliest forms include the IUD, which was invented by the Arabs to stop camels or horses from getting pregnant on long journeys across the desert. Human contraceptives were invented for two reasons:

1. To improve women's lives so that they would not have to worry about the dangers and inconvenience of pregnancy;

2. To control the population as a whole.
