How do you use two past tense in one sentence?

When I lived in Spain I learntSpanish

lived = past simple / learnt = past simple.

While I was watching the Tv the phone rang.

was watching = past continuous / rang = past simple

By the time we got to the station the train had left.

got = past simple / had left = past perfect.
