Suppose the numbers are x and y.Then (x - y)^2 = x^2 - 2xy + y^2 = x^2 + y^2 - 2xy

That is 8^2 = x^2 + y^2 - 2*17

64 = x^2 + y^2 - 34

So x^2 + y^2 = 64 + 34 = 98.
