A:The story of the wise men, or magi (Greek: magoi), is only in Matthew's Gospel, which differs significantly from Luke's Gospel. Matthew says that the magi came to Bethlehem looking for the baby who would become king of the Jews.
Magi was the term used for the priests of the Zoroastrian religion of the Roman Empire, famous throughout the Near East for their wisdom and learning. It is hard to imagine them travelling to the minor Roman outpost of Judea to see a baby who might one day be king of that distant province. The Zoroastrians were awaiting the Saoshyant, who would be born of a virgin to lead humanity in the final struggle against evil. To have known of the magi, the author of Matthew would also have known of the Zoroastrian prophecy, and was depicting them coming to Bethlehem looking for the baby of their prophecy. He portrayed the priests of this great religion wanting to worship Jesus.
