How many national football championships has state won?

Many different colleges can be referred to as "State," although from a national standpoint, Michigan State is the most prominent program simply called "State."

Michigan State has won at least a share of six national championship: 1951, 1952, 1955, 1957, 1965, and 1966. Of those, only 1952 was a "consensus" championship (meaning all major selectors of a "national champion" selected MSU).

Also, three of the championships are generally recognized as "major" championships: 1952, 1965, and 1966 (meaning MSU was selected by at least one "major" poll).
