The Whig party was the new party. The Democrats existed before--but they did radically transform themselves.

For a period, the Democrats (or Democratic-Republicans or the Jeffersonian Democrats) were the only national political party.

The presidency of Andrew Jackson split up the Democrats. "Whigs" originated referred to people who opposed the man they called "King" Andrew.

But the main issue was economic development. The Whigs thought that the national government should follow policies that would encourage economic development. In particular, they wanted a high tariff (tax on imported products) so American industry could compete with England. They also favored having a government sponsored national bank. In general, you could think of them as the party of business.

The Democrats opposed government involvement in the economhy. They wanted low tariffs and no national bank. They feared that banks and corporations were gaining too much power.

But I should also mention that Whigs were cautious about national expansion whereas the Democrats wanted an aggressive expansion party. Consequently, they were also very antagonistic toward Native Americans.

If you were a businessman or somebody who favor reform, you were probably a Whig, If you were a worker, an immigrant. a farmer or a slaveholder, you were probably a Democrat. But some workers were Whigs, some reformers Democrats and so on.

This is an oversimplification of course.

The Whig/Democratic system is called the 2nd American party system. The first was the Federalist/Democratic system; the Whigs were heirs of the Federalists. The 3rd (and current system) party system is the Republican/Democratic system; the Republicans came out of the old Whigs. INSTITUTIONALLY. the current Democratic party comes out of the old Democratic Party and the Republicans out of the Whigs.

But it would be impossible say one 1830s party was just like our Democrats and the other was just like our Republicans. The Whigs were the party of business but they were also the party that wanted to use the power of the national government. The 1830s party was the party of immigrants, farmers, and workers, and the party that distrusted business, but they were also the party that wanted to limit the power of the national government.
