How did the slaves keep their African culture alive?

Often they didn't. They were not allowed to speak their native language, keep their names, practice religious services, and do things that were culturally important. Slaves were considered property and the system did everything it could to remove them from the past and any future. This was a severe system that systematically took the humanity from slaves.
