I find the response to castor oil varies, depending on the size of the dose, compared to the size and age of the person, as well as how and when it is taken. Good, fast results, (typically 1 to 3 hours) can be expected if you weigh 150 pounds or less and take 3 tablespoons of castor oil at least 2 hours after your meal, with plenty of liquids to wash it down. If you weigh more than 150 pounds, add another tablespoon for each 50 pounds more, but do not take over 5 tablespoons! Physical activity, such as moving around/walking speeds it up, and lying down, or sleeping, will slow it down. If taken before bed, be prepared for it to kick in as soon as you get up! Taking a dose that is too small often fails to give any noticeable effect, as a certain amount is required to "trigger" the effect in most people. Castor oil generally works throughout the entire intestinal tract, increasing peristalsis, lubricating the contents, retaining/increasing intestinal water, releasing bile, and causing cramping and a strong desire to defecate, lasting for one or two hours. Dosage for very young, such as under 15 years, should be cut in half, or as advised by a doctor. Frequent, repeated use is not advised.
