Why was mummification in ancient Egypt only used on the pharaoh or wealthy people?

The Egyptians mummified their rulers and dead ones, because they believed that their bodies were still alive in the sense. But simply sleeping and taking a journey into the Underworld. Hey, we still do the same today by burying our dead loved ones.
