Sasol produces petrol primarily through its Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis process, which converts synthetic gas (syngas) derived from coal or natural gas into liquid hydrocarbons. The syngas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, is generated through gasification or reforming. In the FT process, this syngas is catalytically transformed into liquid fuels, including petrol, which can be further refined to meet fuel standards. This technology allows Sasol to produce fuel from abundant local resources, primarily coal.
