1. General Elections

- Held for Lok Sabha once in 5 years

- Lok Sabha has 545 members

- Some state legislature elections are held simultaneously with these parliamentary elections but due to early dismissal/ mid-term elections they got separated gradually.

2. Mid - Term Elections

- Held when an entire legislative assembly dissolves prior to completion of full 5 year term.

3. By - Elections

- When any one person from any legislative assembly leaves his position vacant (due to death, resignation etc.) elections for that one person will be held.

- This person is so elected and remains in position for the unexpired term of the house.
