It is difficult to overstate the significance of the Communist takeover of China in 1949, as it resulted in numerous fundamental changes to China itself and has powerfully affected the global community. Just a few of these changes and effects are as follows: it laid finally to rest the monarchical-imperial history of China; it brought about a significant re-balancing of world power in the direction of socialism (in relation to the democratic-capitalistic West); and it introduced an entirely new force into international relations with the increasingly independent socio-political and economic policies of Chinese leadership (in relation to the Soviet Union and the United States alike).
