Charles Hires invented root beer in the late 19th century while he was looking for a caffeine-free alternative to beer. He experimented with various herbs, roots, and berries, ultimately creating a unique blend that he initially intended to sell as a medicinal tonic. In 1876, he introduced his root beer mix at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, and it quickly gained popularity. Hires later commercialized the drink by bottling it, making it widely available and solidifying its place as a classic American beverage.
