The dandelion was originally cultivated for its nutritional properties. The flower itself can be used to make tea, while the leaves (called the greens) are sometimes used in salads. It wasn't until European settlers brought the flower to the American continents, and they spread wildly in the open grass lands, that it was considered a weed. Some still consider the dandelion a vegetable, and as far as I know, it is the only one that starts with the letter D.
