The first president of the American Philosophical Association was James Edwin Creighton (1861-1924). The APA was founded in 1901 (Benjamin Franklin died long before this time).

American Philosophical Society The first American scientific association to be organized. It was founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1743. Thomas Hopkinson (1709-1751) was the first president and Benjamin Franklin (1705 O.S.-1790) the first secretary. The American Society for Promoting Useful Knowledge merged with the APS in 1769-Franklin became the new president and served until his death in 1790.
