The product of meiOSis I is two haploid cells, each containing half the number of chromosomes as the original diploid cell. During this process, homologous chromosomes are separated, resulting in genetic diversity through independent assortment and crossing over. Each haploid cell will subsequently undergo meiOSis II to further reduce the chromosome number and produce gametes.
