There are several different kinds with slightly different appearances. The purest heroin is a white powder but unlike cocaine it does not have a crystalline structure visible to the human eye; it looks more like powdered milk. More commonly encountered, at least in the USA, is brown heroin, which is a brown powder, ranging in color from light tan to dark brown or almost black. The lowest grade of heroin is called "tar" and looks utterly unlike the two kinds described above. As the name implies, it looks like black tar. Sometimes it is dry and hard but usually it is moist and malleable. When packaged, powder heroin usually comes in small wax baggies, known as "stamps", because these same bags are used by philatelists to preserve their stamps. It is typical for a brand-name to be on the bag to differentiate it from other batches and establish brand loyalty among junkies. Brand names range from the comical to the morbid; examples: "Superman", "Cookies and Cream", "Big Shot", and "Suicide". Tar heroin almost always comes packaged in rubber balloons, and powdered heroin sometimes does as well. WARNING: Heroin is one of the most addictive substances known to man. You should not experiment with it if you are looking for "kicks". People who try it for the first time rarely enjoy the experience. Only after repeated exposure to it, after it changes your physiology, will you feel the intense euphoria that junkies are obsessed with. By that time you will be so addicted that quitting will probably require professional treatment.
