The feast day of Saint Amand is now February 6, previously Feb 1. He is the patron saint of brewers and vinters. Amanda is a feminine derivative of the saint's name.

Amad was a great missionary and a father of monasticism in ancient Belgium. Before he was ordained, he went to live in a small monastery, but his father threatened to disinherit him unless he came home. Amand cheerfully replied, "Christ is my only inheritance."
