Originally named Manikarnika at birth,to a Marthi brahmin Moropant Tambey.She married Raja Gangadhar Rao Niwalkar,in 1842, and became the Maharani of Jhansi. She also adopted a son named Damodar Rao,although he never received his inheritance.
