Why did Ralph and his group feel threatened by their suspicion that Jack's tribe would be painted?

When the boys painted their faces, they became less human and more primitive. Ralph, Piggy and Samneric feared the painted boys more because they became a gang and a very aggressive threat against them. They were less likely to stick to civil conventions and more likely to resort to violence.
