Why didn't Henry VIII turn a protestant?

He wanted to divorce Catherine of Aragon but the Pope wouldn't let him, so he broke from the Roman Catholic Church and started the CHurch of England. It is said that he didn't really care about the religion, he just wanted a divorce.
