What is the purpose of soundproof curtains?

Soundproof curtains can help to dim the noise of outside traffic, localised building noise and even birds. The soundproof curtains commercially available are however only of limited usage as the material is generally not thick enough to provide true sound proofing, for which one would need a vinyl or fibreglass layer within the fabric and is generally too heavy for domestic usage.
