Can a coil be made to fire not being on a car?

probably an old style 6 volt coil with an old-style 'lantern=battery' (6 volt)

big fat square thing with the springs on top or old style 12 volt coil with like

gas lawn mower key-start (completely sealed) battery /has male tabs/ on top.

but coil will not hold a charge for later use.
