Sauerkraut was renamed liberty cabbage during World War I because of the distrust and hatred towards the German race. Most everything German was frowned upon, including German immigrants. Even the hamburger was renamed salisbury steak because the Word hamburger originated in the city of Hamburg, Germany, the second largest city in Berlin.
