Weddings among American Christians frequently have several activities.

First: The brides friends may give her a shower. This is a party where they shower her with gifts. These may be anything from a pot holder or a dish towel with a cute saying from a causal acquaintance to something expensive. Everything gets the same amount of applause.

Second: There may be a women's party for the bride.

Third: There may be a men's party for the groom.

Fourth: The wedding ceremony is a religious ceremony usually held in a church or chapel. A protestant pastor or Roman Catholic Priest leads it. He (or she) speaks about the importance of marriage in a Christian context. The couple exchange vows. And he proclaims them married.

They walk down the aisle and out of the church together.

They will return later for pictures.

Fifth: A wedding reception usually follows the ceremony. This can be anything from coffee, cookies, and a wedding cake, to a sit down dinner with champagne if there is wine. (Do not ask me why there must be champagne.) (Some protestant churches do not allow their members to drink alcohol.)
