In order to gain the leverage needed to remove the Jim Crow system, African-Americans needed to leave the south. The Great Migration pushed blacks from their traditional homes in the south, to seek more opportunity and less restrictions in the north. The American Civil Rights Movement began and was formed in the North in the 1940's. Because of the need to keep the nation and economy moving, Franklin Delano Roosevelt passed Executive Order 8802 which effectively banned racial discrimination in all businesses connected with the war effort.
