Playing smart Poker involves 2 main things: knowing your odds and adapting to your opponent. A major part of these things is know what your opponent does with what hands. Then you analyze what is the best thing to do based on your hand and what you think your opponents equity is against you.

Generally you want to make your opponent fold when you have no pair or nothing that might win at a showdown. If you might win but also might not, then you usually want to catch bluffs if your opponent is likely to bluff. If not then know that you have to fold when he is probably not bluffing and the odds to call are not good enough(like when the pot is small or there are not many chips in a players stack).

Poker is a rare game where you control the odds and can win in the long term. Most types of gambling will only cause you to lose money over all but with poker you can win. In any form of gambling, however, there is risk.
