Why do firemen use a pole to come down?

The pole is a quick way of getting from the upper floor, usually where the offices etc are, down to the ground floor where the vehicles are. A well drilled team of 10 firefighters would practice getting down the pole in under 20 seconds; this would be almost impossible if using stairs and there would be a high chance of injury if there was a slip on the stairs.
