I have heard from one of my English teachers that in Egypt, whenever their was a new Pharaoh, they would command that every heiroglyphic of the previous Pharaoh be sanded off of the temples.

If the question is specifically talking about book-burning, and not just general censorship, the earliest event we have on record is the "Burning of the books and burial of the scholars" in 213 BCE by Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi of China.
