Hurricane Sandy, also known as Superstorm Sandy, reached peak winds of about 115 miles per hour (mph) while it was a Category 3 hurricane. As it approached the U.S. East Coast in late October 2012, it weakened to a post-tropical cyclone with wind speeds of around 80 mph. The storm caused significant damage due to its high winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surge.
