What do the red and white stripes on the American flag signify?

The 13 strips on the American flag signify the 13 colonies of Great Britain who claimed independence from England ion 1776 and formed the early confederation of the united states. Over the course of the 19th century the US acquired land from the French and Spanish amongst others, and the number of states rose.
