Some slaves ran out to the mountains (these slaves were called Maroons) even though they knew they would be beaten and returned to the plantations if they were caught, while others like Samuel Sharpe (a Jamaican national hero) tried to speak out against slavery. There were also rebellions, which although they contributed to some countries' independence ended in the hanging of the main instigators and the death of many plantation owners.
