Teddy Roosevelt was shot in 1912, while running for a third term as President. He had served the remainder of William McKinley's second term through 1905, and was re-elected to serve from 1905 to 1909. However, after leaving the White House, he became critical of the administration of his Republican successor, William Howard Taft. So he ran in 1912 as the candidate of the Progressive Party, known as the Bull Moose Party.
The division of the Republicans allowed Democratic candidate Woodrow Wilson to win in 1912. The bullet was never removed from Teddy's chest and he lived until 1919, dying at the age of 61.
