In order to become a geriatric care manager, one must obtain a GCM certificate; a GCM certificate is received through a combination of demonstrating applied knowledge, training, supervised work experience, and the passing of a final exam. GCMs typically have prior training in nursing, social work, gerontology, or other health service areas. They may obtain certification through various professional associations, such as the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers (US).
