The area known as the Gold Coast, due to its abundance of gold, is located in present-day Ghana. It was named for the significant quantities of gold that were found and traded along its coast, attracting European traders in the 15th century. The Gold Coast became a major center for the gold trade in West Africa before eventually gaining independence and becoming the nation of Ghana in 1957.
