Where did the saying the cat is out of the bag come from?

People actually do sometimes put cats in bags. One traditional method of getting rid of excess cats is to put them in a burlap bag and then drown them. But it has been noticed that once a cat manages to get out of your bag, it is difficult to put it back in. They tend to resist. Similarly, once something becomes known, it is difficult to suppress that knowledge.
