The Vietnam War (1954-1975) resulted from the conflict of factions in the country after the French were defeated in 1954. The northern half of the country had adopted the communist ideology of China, while the southern half was controlled by dissident generals and former French interests, and established a free enterprise system. Beginning with guerrilla insurgencies, the North attempted to regain control of the South. In the Cold War period, the US supported South Vietnam while the USSR supported North Vietnam, conducting the major proxy war of the late twentieth century.
