The idea of tulpas originated with Tibetan monks who claimed they were able to think beings into existence. Supposedly to create a tulpa, it takes immense discipline and concentration. The process involves:

1. Taking a subconscious aspect of your mind and focusing on it until you understand it and you become aware of it.

2. Then you make it have a personality- think of what this being's thoughts, likes, emotions, etc. would be.

3. Next you give it a form- what it will appear to look like

4. Then begin to address it as if it were actually there and eventually your mind will view it as another being.

5. It will eventually become a sentient being.

If you are successful, others should be able to see it in some form or another. Tulpas were supposedly used for missions or simple companionship and it is not just monks who can create them. Tulpas can become a problem because they often free themselves from their makers and sometimes even become rebellious, fighting or killing their owner or simply running off into the world. All of this is speculative, as the existence of tulpas have not been proven. Some cultures or people are more willing to accept the existence of these beings than others. But according to the ones who do believe in tulpas, they are both hard to make and keep control of, but they may be useful as well.
