There are two basic types of production involved in CD-ROM's: All CD-ROMS are made with 4 basic layers, starting at the bottom: 1) A clear polycarbonate disc B) a reflective layer C) a protective layer D) top artwork layer Blank CD-ROMS: have no real data on them (the inner ring identifies the disk, maker, capacity, and production information) and normally the artwork layer is a writable surface to enable labeling the disk. Non-Blank CD-ROMS: have data already encoded and "pressed" into the disk - this allows for specific copy protections to be used, and normally has a unique artwork layer.
