The Confederacy. The employment of the slaves in the works of fortification, repair or building of roads, railways and logistical purposes, allowed the Confederates to deploy more troops for fighting purposes.

That helped to ensure that the ratio between Federals and Rebels units on the battlefield was almost never overwhelming in favour of the Union, which had generally to use its combat units for those purposes.
