One of the main conflicts in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is man vs. society. Johnny Nolan's love of alcohol and struggle to maintain a steady job, Aunt Sissy's marriage issues, and Francie dealing with the way people treat her and her social standing in society. Francie lives in a world of poverty, once her father passes away, she must deal with the struggles of everyday, working life.
