A motif is a dominant idea or central theme. For example, the Word "nevermore" in Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven" would be a motif because it is repeated at the end of each stanza.
Some other examples would be:
"The sonata had a softly repeating motif in the bass clef."
"The painted motif on the wall reminded Sally of the one in her own home."
