What is Muckracking journalism?

Journalism that embraces the most tawdry, perverse, and unfortunate stories--

typically something quite embarassing, sensational, or dirty--in an attempt to tantalize the media outlet's audience. The stories are often partially fabricated and take on a life of their own. Muckracking usually implies some sort of machination or manipulation on the part of the journalist or media concern.
