How does oil field brine damage the environment?

Brine water mainly comprises of Chlorides with small quantity of oil and grease. Brine is stored in lined pits to avoid soil and groundwater contamination.

In case of brine spill or storage in unlined pits it infiltrate into the subsurface and will contaminate soil and groundwater.
