Why is red transparent on IR images?

Any infra-red image I've seen displays the opposite. In B&W, that which reflects more IR is whiter in the print, darker in the negative. In color, it's anybody's guess as to how it will reproduce. Note that I assume you are not referring to thermal images, so neither am I.
