Willem Janszoon, the Dutch explorer, hoped to find a southern continent, often referred to as Terra Australis, during his first voyage in 1606. He aimed to explore uncharted territories and seek new trade routes, particularly for spices and other valuable commodities. His expedition eventually led him to the western coast of Australia, making him one of the first Europeans to set foot on the continent.
