See that's a tricky question that can be answered a couple of ways. Some would say that no States regulate body piercing, which would be true to some extent, then others would say that all States regulate body piercing, which would also be true to some extent......... Confused? Yeah I thought so......I will explain what regulation means when it come to body piercing.
Each body piercing studio is a business and that business must have a business license for the town or city it's in to conduct business, with that licensing from let say the city, the city will require that studio to under go a health inspection prior to being granted a license to provide services. The health inspection is where a lot of wannabe body piercers get caught, they don't have the knowledge, skills, training or facilities to properly provide the services. They flunk the health inspection and lots of money goes down the tubes due to poor research and even worse knowledge.
Every body piercing facility be it in a hair salon or a tattoo parlor must also be inspected prior to providing any service and the inspection report must be posted along with the business license so any one can see it.
Now as for State regulations, most States leave that up to there respective Health Protection Office to deal with just like tattooing or hair salons any place a service is provided to the human body they must be inspected to ensure public safety. Some States have enacted regulations geared just toward body piercing and others don't and relie on there standing health protection regulations.
So you see all States regulate body piercing, but only some have enacted specific regulations on body piercing alone generally due to some one doing something they shouldn't have been doing in the first place. Check out the APP website for more detailed information about State body piercing regulations, they can be found at www.safepiercing.org . Now I am not an APP member nor do I ever intend on being after 16 plus years of doing this professionally in Canada, but the APP in the US is a fairly good source for body piercing stats in the US. So check them out.
Don't forget that townships, counties and cities can also regulate body piercing so there is another stop gap in the road to regulation.
