How can sprinkler heads get damaged?

its just water running out of the pipes from the valves. it happens when the heads are lower than the valves. even if the valve is off, the water left in the pipe still runs downhill. like water running out of a hose that isn't connected. If its happening all the time your valve may be leaking, and that should be fixed.
